Providing daily care for a cognitively impaired loved one is an extraordinary challenge under the best of circumstances. When a very mobile but impaired senior suddenly wanders, the day to day challenges can turn to panic. Sometimes even the best safeguards cannot stop a determined loved one. While most situations are resolved quickly when the loved one is found, sometimes tragedy can strike.
What can families do to protect their loved ones? First of all, start with the basics such as door locks, door alarms, yard fencing, disabling vehicles, GPS tracking devices – which can be installed in shoes – and ID bracelets. Also, keep law enforcement phone numbers handy, have a recent photo handy and notify your neighbors of your situation. Finally, if the risk becomes too great, consider a more secure environment for your loved one before it’s too late.
