According to a recent USA Today article (“Extra virgin olive oil staves off Alzheimer’s, preserves memory, new study shows”), researchers at Temple University’s Katz School of Medicine have shown that extra virgin olive oil protects against memory loss, preserves the ability to learn and reduces conditions associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Studying two groups of mice – one fed an extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) diet – researchers found the mice with the EVOO enrich diet had better memories and learning abilities compared with mice who didn’t consume the oil.
This is further evidence that a Mediterranean diet offers a number of health benefits including lower cardiovascular disease. Who doesn’t want a better memory and improved learning ability? With a little extra virgin olive oil in your diet, you may even be able to stave off Alzheimer’s.
